Drain Snaking: A Method for Clearing Clogs

Drain snaking is a plumbing technique used to clear blockages in pipes and drains using a flexible, coiled metal cable called a drain auger or plumber’s snake. It is an effective way to remove hair, grease, food particles, and other debris causing slow drains or complete clogs.

How Drain Snaking Works

A metal cable with a corkscrew tip is inserted into the drain. The cable is manually or mechanically rotated and pushed forward to break through or latch onto the clog.

The blockage is then pulled out or broken apart, restoring normal water flow.

Types of Drain Snakes

Handheld Drain Snake (For Small Clogs)

  • Best for: Bathroom sinks, bathtubs, and shower drains.
  • Typically 3-25 feet long with a crank handle for manual operation.

Toilet Auger (Closet Auger) (For Toilet Clogs)

  • Features a rigid, curved shaft to navigate toilet traps.
  • More effective than plungers for deeper toilet blockages.

Motorized Drain Snake (Power Auger) (For Tough Clogs)

  • Electric or battery-powered for stubborn, deep clogs.
  • Used for main sewer lines and heavily clogged pipes.

Drum Auger (Plumber’s Snake) (For Medium to Large Clogs)

  • A heavy-duty version of a handheld snake.
  • Used for kitchen drains, bathtubs, and washing machine lines.

Sewer Drain Snake (Rooter Machine) (For Sewer Line Blockages)

  • A commercial-grade machine that clears tree roots and large obstructions.
  • Used by professional plumbers for severe sewer backups.

When to Use a Drain Snake

✔ Slow-draining sinks, bathtubs, or showers
✔ Recurring clogs that don’t clear with a plunger
✔ Foul odors from drains due to buildup
✔ Toilet clogs that resist plunging
✔ Preventative drain cleaning to remove minor obstructions

When NOT to Use a Drain Snake

✔ For broken or collapsed pipes – Snaking won’t fix structural damage.
✔ For grease clogs in kitchen drains – Hydrojetting is more effective.
✔ For deep sewer line clogs – May require professional equipment.
